What Could Be the Problem With My Roof?

Find the Problem and Get it Fixed

Been noticing problems with your roof? Here are some of the more common reasons for leaks that could require roofing services:

EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS

Heat and ultraviolet rays cause roofing materials to deteriorate over time. When water gets underneath the shingles, shakes or other roofing materials, it can work its way to the deck and cause the roof structure to rot. High winds can lift the edges of shingles and force water and debris underneath them.

DAMAGED FLASHING

If the flashing pieces develop cracks from weather or age, you’ll soon be getting leaks. But because the flashing is concealed beneath your shingles, you may not see the corrosion that is letting the water through.

BROKEN OR MISSING TILES/SHINGLES

Prolonged rain or wind storms can often cause broken or missing tiles/shingles on your roof.

MISSING GRANULES ON SHINGLES

Missing granules on shingles can be caused by hail or storm damage but can also be caused by the age of the shingle. If there are several areas where your shingles are missing granules, it’s probably time to replace the roof. If these shingles are not repaired or replaced, your roof may no longer be able to keep water from entering your home and damaging your interior.

MOSS OR ALGAE GROWTH

Algae growth causes your roof to turn a dark color. The algae itself is usually brown or black which results in a streaked, dirty rooftop. Moss or algae growth is caused by air-borne algae which settles on your roof.

BADLY SEALED VALLEYS

If the valley of your roof isn’t installed correctly and sealed, it can cause gaps in your roof's protection and can allow water to run directly into your home.

IMPROPERLY INSTALLED VENTS & CONDENSATION

If roof vents are not installed and sealed correctly by a professional, it can allow water into your attic. If this is the problem, then you’ll notice wet spots after it rains. Moisture in a poorly ventilated attic promotes decay of the wood decking and rafters, possibly destroying the roof structure.

Anatomy of Your Roof

Reduce the possibility of significant damage in your home by educating yourself and taking care of the important parts of your roof.

Roofing Parts

HIP

The inclined angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes running from the ridge to the eaves

Field of Roof

The central portion of a roof, besides the perimeter and flashing

Ridge

The top or peak of the roof

Eave

The lower part of the roof that extends beyond the side of the house

Rake

The inclined edge of a roof over a wall

Ridge Vent

A vent along the ridge board of the roof, allowing moisture to escape

Dormer

Special rooms or windows that have their own small roof

Chimney

A vertical flue that provides a path where smoke from a fire is carried through the wall or roof of a building

Gutter

Carries away rainwater

Soffit

The underside of the eave or cornice which provides ventilation holes to keep the underside of the roof dry and cool

Fascia

The vertical edge or face located at the bottom of the roof

How to Inspect Your Roof Indoors

Check out the following ways you can inspect your roof from the inside to find problem signs that may indicate you need a roof replacement.

  1. Sagging Decking
If the decking is sagging or deteriorating the decking will also require replacement when a new roof is installed.
  2. Outside Light Seen Through the Roof
This may be common and not a problem on shake roofs since the wooden shakes will swell during wet months, preventing any leaks.
  3. Leaking in the Attic
Pay close attention to dark spots in the wood especially around vents, chimneys and other holes to the roof.
  4. Dark Spots in the Wood
If the spot is still wet or soft, it is a current problem. If the spot is dry and hard, it is most likely an old problem that has been fixed.
  5. Signs of Water Damage or Leaking
You can usually spot water damage in the form of water stains or sagging ceilings. This could be from an active leak in the roof or to condensation caused by poor roof ventilation.

As quickly as you can, move furniture, rugs and electronics out of the way. Then grab a bucket to collect the incoming water.
  2. Remove the Water
Mop up all standing water, use a fan or dehumidifier to circulate the air in the room and pull up any wet carpet to dry.
